Abstract

This paper aims at studying to what extent the public libraries spread political awareness and participation in the Jordanian society in light of some changing factors. The paper is based on a field study of the library of Greater Amman Municipality and Shuman Public Library.
The study includs a data of 180 persons who regularly attend the two libraries. The researcher has prepared a measurement which is also subject to truth and stability test. After analyzing and explaining the measurement, the results have shown that libraries play a moderate role in political awareness and participation. The library enlarges this awareness for being a source of information which deepens the individual's knowledge of his own community, and for offering activities which enriches political awareness
The study has shown that there are no clear statistical differences due to sex, age, and educational qualifications. However, obvious statistical differences are spotted among persons of different academic specialties. For instance, people who study languages and human sciences in general play a positive role in spreading political awareness compared to students who studied different majors. The study has shown that the sources of information  affect the effectiveness of spreading political awareness. In addition, there are other factors which affect political awareness, yet they are not discussed here. The researcher recommend that the libraries need to develop their sources and activities, to rely more on digital technology to facilitate its services, and to promote its positive role in forming an active political citizen fully aware of his/her society's political issues.
