The Relationship between the Egyptian Youth Information Seeking on Facebook and their Cognition during Crisis Times: A Field Study of Port Said Stadium Crisis

Abstract

            While originally intended for social use ,Online social network sites have turned in the recent years to a media tool disseminating information about current events in society.
 The purpose of this study is to examine the  relation between information seeking through facebook, the most used social network site among Egyptian youth,and their cognition  during the 2012 port said stadium crisis.The ideas of information seeking theory, media dependency theory and media richness theory are utilized and Data were collected in a survey of individuals aged 18–30 through a purposive  sample. Results proved that  there is a correlation between heavy usage of facebook and cognition  of port said stadium crisis,and also indicates to the increasing use of the site during crisis times. findings suggest that different organizations must adopt the use of social network sites in emergency management.
