Abstract

This Paper is a critical study of Quentin Skinner’s methodology of the history of social and political thought. It argues that explanation in terms of the author’s intentions, far from being an historical form of explanation, is an impediment to learning anything of value from the past and is incompatible with the tradition of historicism, the approaches we ought to employ in order to use the past to think about the present.
