Geographical Aspects of the Internet in the City of Aswan – A Study in the Geography of Communication

Abstract

This study aims at exploring the geographical aspects of the Internet – its importance, motives for using it, the most wide-spread applications used, hours of use, factors influencing this use and its geographical distribution, traits of its users as viewed by the sample subjects - in the city of Aswan, based on an analysis of its uses by the sample, the effectiveness of its use and mechanisms and strategies for enhancing this effectiveness, in addition to an opinion survey on Internet users regarding the pros and cons of using the Internet by the sample. The study seeks to practically underscore the value of the role of the geographer in identifying Internet uses and continued wide spread in the sample examined.
Following an introduction, the study is divided into eight sections that seek to achieve the objectives outlined above, followed by a conclusion summarizing findings and recommendations. The first section discusses the importance of using the Internet in the location of the study. Section Two identifies the distribution of Internet lines in the area. Section Three focuses on the factors influencing the distribution of places and uses. Section Four discusses the motivations and the Internet sites frequented by users. Section Five discusses the characteristics of the Internet while Section Six focuses on the geographical distribution of the Internet as a medium of communication in the area of the study, other cities and towns in Aswan and Egypt. Section Seven discusses the traits of the users and Section Eight is a an assessment of te attitudes of the sample subjects toward the use of the Internet in the area of the study.
