Abstract

This research aims at identifying the features of the public postal system in Egypt during the Byzantine Period (284 - 642 AD), through a documentary study that sheds light on the establishment of the public mail system and the purpose of its existence in the Byzantine Empire. The study then discusses the most important administrative regulations for public land mail in Egypt during the period of study, as well as the public postal land stations, and also the allocations made by the Byzantine administration to the public mail animals and those who were operating and taking care of them. Finally the study discusses the procedures set for the movement of the messengers charged with carrying mail from one place to another to accomplish various mail missions. The researcher has followed the analytic approach to the subject of study, which is based on the presentation of literary and documentary texts and analyzing them in order to get out the best possible results, taking advantage as much as possible of the recent studies that touched on some aspects of the topic of study. At the end of the research, the researcher was keen to present the most important findings that he reached through his study of the subject, and presented his analytical vision of the elements included in the study.
