The Spatial Variation in Illiteracy in Baghdad for the years 1997,and 2013

Abstract

This study investigates the spatial distribution of the illiterate population at and over the age of 10 in relation to gender, and the urban/ rural environment of the administrative divisions of the city of Baghdad for the years 1997,and 2013. The study adopted the descriptive and analytical approaches in analyzing the results of the 1997 census, and the illiteracy data related to the poverty and maternal mortality (IPMM) survey of the 2013 census provided by the Central Bureau of Statistics. Among the conclusions of this study is the increase of the illiterate population in Baghdad to more than 400,000 during the period of the study (an increase of 3.8%),the noticeable increase in illiteracy among males compared to the slight decrease among females during the same period، and that of the urban areas compared to the rural areas.
