Abstract

This study analyzes the Hebrew media discourse in the post-2023 Gaza War period, focusing on the role played by the Israeli press in shaping political awareness within Israeli society amidst worsening internal divisions. It examines the case of Haaretz and Israel Hayom, two newspapers representing two contrasting ideological trends in the Israeli media. Haaretz represents the left-wing trend, while Israel Hayom represents the right-wing, pro-establishment trend. The study proceeds from the premise that the Hebrew media, especially in times of conflict and crisis, not only covers events but also actively contributes to shaping the public's political awareness.

The study focuses on analyzing how the two newspapers addressed the internal division in Israel in light of the repercussions of the recent war on Gaza. It reveals differences in media coverage, the frameworks used, language, political positions, and the position of war and internal division within the priorities of each newspaper's media agenda. It also explains these differences in light of the political-ideological backgrounds of each newspaper.

A sample of press material published between October and December 2023 was selected, including opinion articles and political reports, using qualitative analysis tools focusing on the language used, media frames, and the nature of the political representation of actors (government, opposition, army, public opinion).

This study seeks to provide a deeper understanding of the nature of Hebrew media discourse in the post-conflict period and its impact on shaping political positions and public opinion within Israeli society.
