Abstract

The study aims at investigating the interpretation of genitive conditional particles in classical Arabic in the light of the contemporary theory of linguistics. The study shows that, unlike other genitive conditional particles, '?ayy' can be interpreted as a universal quantifier or an existential quantifier while all other genitive conditional particles always have a universal interpretation. It is argued that '?ayy' is a variable that lacks  inherent quantificational force in the sense of Heim's notion of indefiniteness, and that it gets its universal or existential interpretation by an operator that binds it. Other genitive conditional particles are argued to be inherently universal quantifiers.
