Abstract

This study deals with the Ottoman-Omani relations during the siege of the ruler of Iran, Karim Khan Al-Zand, of the Ottoman Basra, and this is in the light of the Humayun letter sent by the Ottoman Sultan Abdul Hamid I to the ruler of Oman, Imam Ahmed bin Said Al-Busaidi. This message comes within the framework of a number of correspondences exchanged between the rulers of the two states. As this letter is evidence of the old relations between the Ottoman and Omani states, these distinguished relations were governed by coordination and joint cooperation in order to serve the supreme interests of both countries, within the framework of mutual respect, and appreciation from each party to the role that each country could play in maintaining security and addressing any dangers besetting the Islamic nation. This study also prompts us to point out the importance of such archival documents in writing the history of political and military relations between the Ottoman and Omani states according to a new vision and forward-looking view.
