Badiou attributes the inability of man today to explore the true meaning of happiness to two main reasons: The first is that contemporary philosophical trends, because of the approaches they adopt and the goals they seek, are unable to formulate a theoretical awareness that enables us to understand the true meaning of life, and thus the meaning of our existence in it. The second reason relates to the characteristics of our contemporary world as it is today, which is dominated by commodity communication, monetary abstraction, the elevation of the importance of imaginary security, and the rejection of values that encourage intellectual courage and the desire for change and adventure.
Badiou believes that the reason contemporary philosophies fail to respond to the problems of the world today is that these philosophies are designed to conform to this world as it is and to the form of life it imposes, and not to what true life should be and what we want from it. Therefore, the reason for deprivation of a happy life is the inability to live the life that it deserves, and in order to know the meaning of true life, we must start from reforming philosophy itself, and restoring its main demand; the truth.
