Abstract

The current study aimed to reveal the kinds or types of student violence practiced within the university from the point of view of a sample of Kuwait University students.  Also, the study aimed to monitor the factors leading to this student violence from their view point as well, whether these factors are from inside or outside the university or from within the family.
The study was a descriptive / analytical field study. It relied on the social survey method using the sample style. The questionnaire was used as a main tool for collecting data from the students. It was distributed and collected by hand from the students inside the university by the researcher. A non-random stratified sample of 543 students from Kuwait University colleges was taken from different academic years.
The study reached a set of results, the most important of which are: that students practice verbal and physical violence against each other, students also practice verbal violence against faculty members, and finally student violence targets public and private property inside or outside the university.
From the students’ point of view, the most important factors leading to student violence within the university were represented in the lack of a culture of tolerance and respect for the other, the spread of exclusion policy, the failure to give students the freedom to express their opinions, and the competition between students in student union elections.
The most important factors leading to student violence from outside the university were represented by intolerance to the values of the tribe, clan, sectarianism, intolerance to a religious or political doctrine, the absence of the language of dialogue, the feeling of social marginalization, the disallowance of student gatherings, the feeling that community participation has no value, and the lack of legitimate channels through which students express themselves.
In addition, the research sample confirmed that the most important factors leading to student violence from within the family were the decline in the role of the family in the process of socialization, the exposure of children to violence by parents, discrimination in treatment between children, repression and lack of dialogue within the family. Finally, the family does not monitor the programs, films and series that are shown by Arab and foreign satellite channels that call for violence.
At the end of the study, a set of recommendations and proposals were developed, which, if benefited from, can reduce, mitigate or treat the problem of student violence in the university.
