Abstract

The first Serbian uprising of 1804 marked the beginning of modern history in the Balkan Peninsula and represented an unmatched importance in the history of the Eastern question, because it is considered as the first Balkan uprising in the outset of modern nationalism era, and played a major role in establishing a series of national states on the ruins of the Ottoman and Austrian empires. There were several circumstances and reasons for this particular spot of the Balkans that were behind the eruption of this uprising. Given these circumstances and reasons that the Serbs exclusively endowed with out of the rest of the Balkans, therefore this paper focuses on them. The paper is divided into subtitles each one trying to shed light on a specific cause or circumstance that played a role in shaping the national feeling of the Serbs and a forward step in the process of breaking the yoke of foreign domination until the eruption of the uprising.
