Abstract

Environmental and sustainable development issues have gained a fair amount of importance in the past two decades, especially with regard to the need to preserve natural resources for future generations, the scarcity of water and energy resources, and climatic changes and their effects on many aspects of social, economic and political life.

Environmental problems pose a challenge to economic and social development, as the environment is the dynamic storehouse of natural resources that man exploits to meet his living needs. Environmental issues have become increasingly preoccupying the whole world, especially after the United Nations Conference on the Environment was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1992. The Rio Declaration on Environment and Development emphasized that in order to achieve sustainable development, environmental protection should be an integral part of the development process.
