Abstract

After the severe ordeal that the people of Andalusia suffered from as a result of the fall of Granada in 1492, Algeria was one of the countries to which they resort. It welcomed them as a nation and a land. Moreover, its rulers helped and saved them from the oppression of the Spaniards by carrying them to its land. As they have been settled and achieved their stability, they become a strong and indomitable force to combat all forms of arrays that Algeria has experienced, particularly from the side of the Spanish due to the hatred and revenge for the abuse, torture and inquisition as well as looting all of their proprieties and depriving them of their religion at their hands.  After their settlement in Algeria, they had the immense impact regarding the military side. As such, Algeria became a naval force to which the States of the West fear and take it into consideration. In addition, it been given a name as the House of Jihad in the Ottoman documents.
Accordingly, the subject of our paper revolves around the Morisco-Andalusian contribution in the military side of the Ottoman Algeria with the aim of highlighting the contribution in each of the following approaches:
1-   The fortifications and military defensive structures: this part have worked on reconstructing and buttressing the castles and forts as well as digging trenches in the important coastal cities, particularly Algiers, in addition to constructing their military barracks.
2-   The military manufacturing: the Moriscos have contributed in manufacturing gunpowder and cannons as well as preparing ships and military equipment. Undoubtedly, they have been ahead of the way in this area. The Algerian Navy has benefited from the experience and efficiency of this community.
3-   The internal security: the Andalusians have defended the coasts of Algeria against the recurrent attacks of the Spanish instead of maintaining the basis of Ottoman power and rule as well as fighting the remnants of the Hafsid and Zayani administration later. Moreover, the rulers have formed from them protectors and garrisons using them to guard most of the cities they subjected.
4-   The naval jihad: the fighters have participated in the Algerian fleet and maintained the maritime jihad as well as to awakening the Spanish sleep due to their profound in Spanish language and of the Spanish coasts and its weakness. The aim of that was to rescue their brothers who are stuck there at the mercy of the Inquisition, or to help them in their revolts against the Spanish reign, or in retaliation from their executioners that tortured and treated them badly such as: torturing, exile, Christianization, property looting)
