Abstract

The current study focuses on the places mentioned in Al-Kitāb by Sibawayh for the purpose of locating, documenting, knowing and associating them with particular writers. This makes it possible to draw a geographical map for the places to show the spaciousness of the linguistic map the book as well as the mind of that prominent linguist had. The study finds that Sibawayh knew the places and the rules Arab syntacticians set to authorize their use. The number of places in his book reached one hundred and fifty. The study further finds that Sibawayh concerned himself with the place for its linguistic value. The reader, therefore, observes that Sibwayh took good care of it. Based on Sibawayh's description of the different places his book included, one can easily tell that he was familiar with the traditions and customs of their inhabitants.
