Abstract

The current study investigates the criteria set by Abū Bakr al-Zubaydī in the book entitled Laḥn al-‘awāmm to judge the dialectical speech errors which the Andalusian writers and intellectuals made. For that purpose, we read the book and extracted the criteria mentioned in it. The criteria, which were of different linguistic levels, were based on: the Holy Quran, prophetic Hadiths and aphorisms selected from the works of prominent Arab writers: poetry and prose (languages and dialects).
The precision and accuracy of al-Zubaydī's judgements spring from his extensive knowledge and experience, and from the availability of the resources he referred to in his book. Among the books he cited are: Al-Kitab by Sibawayh, Laḥn al-‘aāmma by Al-Sajestani, Islah Al-Mantiq by Ibn Al-sikeet, Adab Al-Katib by Ibn Qutaybah, Al-Amali by Al-Qali, Meanings of the Holy Quran by Al-Nahhas, Al-Fasih by Al-Tha'alab, Kitab AL-Nabaat by Abu Hanifa.
