Abstract

Both Walt Whitman and Langston Hughes had dreams for their nations and believed that those dreams would come true only if their nations believed in their national discourses and put them into action. Thus, both poets were propagators of national discourses and resistants of colonial discourses. Hence, this paper aims at analysing the ideologies instilled into Whitman and Hughes's minds and reflected through their poems by means of a thorough analysis of some of their poems, aspiring to a better understanding of the different images of America depicted in their poems.
