Abstract

Shanty towns (ST) appeared as a results of several factors: economic, political and demographic among others. These factors pushed rural populations to move to big cities and settle randomly on the outskirts with no regards to legal or urban regulations.
This study looks at the problem of ST from several perspectives:
ü  How did ST develop? And why appear in Nouakchott?
ü  Distribution and types of ST in Nouakchott
ü  What are the risks associated with ST and their impact on development?
ü  How to stop and solve the problem of ST?
ü  What solutions to limit the spread of ST in Nouakchott?

This study identified some of the causes of the geographical distribution of ST, their development and some characteristics of the population of ST in Nouakchott. Remedial solutions are also suggested for some of the key issues caused and faced by ST.
