Abstract

Studies of modern literary criticism have almost stopped with the emergence of a new tendency in philosophical thinking. This philosophical thinking, which was predominant in the postmodern phase, has not yet experienced its actual application in appropriate and compliant literary critical trends. Hence, this study is a current attempt to encourage contemporary critical research to focus on the philosophical thought and the identification of its origins and principles as they represent the intellectual bases and foundations of any modern literary criticism. As such, the first part of the study is dedicated to define the term "discourse" linguistically and terminologically in contemporary studies. The second part of the study deals with developing a simplified outline of the trends of discourse analysis in modern thought, and then proceeds to explain the intellectual foundations of discourse analysis in postmodern studies, followed by a conclusion and the sources of study.
