The research deals with a problem that is of great importance because knowledge is the top priority for nation building and progress, while Iraq is currently suffering from high rates of illiteracy and different percentages from one region to another and from one category to another. Therefore, educational departments should pay attention to education and its policies and philosophy so as to keep pase with progress and development. Therefore, the present research is concerned with highlighting illiteracy, its dangers and how to treat it . Accordingly, the research included three chapters. The first chapter deals with the general framework of the study, which includes the problem of research, its importance, its objectives, and the most important concepts. And the second chapter  is devoted to  illiteracy in Iraq – Its type. The third chapter was the causes of illiteracy and its dangers and the conclusion was the results, recommendations and proposals
