Animism is one of the oldest religious beliefs known to humanity. It is based on the belief in the existence of spirits that inhabit living beings and inanimate objects، exerting influence on the material world.
This belief has remained alive in many traditional societies، particularly in the African continent، where it has formed the foundation of human understanding of the world and the existence surrounding it.
In Eastern Sudan، a region distinguished by its cultural and ethnic diversity، animism continues to play a role in shaping local beliefs and popular traditions، despite the spread of monotheistic religions. These beliefs are evident in daily life rituals، in the human connection with natural elements such as mountains، trees، and valleys، and in the invocation of ancestral spirits for protection or sustenance.
Studying animism in this region provides an entry point into understanding the structure of traditional thought and how society expresses its views on the unseen and the sacred. It also contributes to documenting an aspect of cultural heritage that is threatened by the forces of modernity and globalization.
This is where the significance of this research lies — in its attempt to explore the manifestations of animism in Eastern Sudan، analyze its impact on social and cultural life، and clarify its relationship with contemporary religious and social transformations.
