Social support is one of the most crucial factors contributing to improving the quality of life of families of children with autism. These families face significant challenges in dealing with their children—psychologically, socially, and economically. Therefore, it has become essential to provide social support as an effective means of alleviating the burdens placed upon them.
This study aims to shed light on the concept of social support, its types, and its effects on families of children with autism. It also emphasizes the importance of understanding social support, analyzing the needs of these families for social and psychological assistance, and examining the impact of social support on their quality of life. Furthermore, it explores the role of institutions and the community in providing such support.
The study includes a theoretical section that discusses relevant literature, and a field section based on the social survey method using a purposive sample. A special scale was developed, and (50) participants were selected from families of children with autism who attend the “Mumayazoon” Institution seeking social and psychological support. The study measured the level of support they receive from society as a whole.
The findings revealed several results, including deficiencies in official policies and a lack of comprehensiveness. It was found that official policies in Iraq still focus primarily on providing therapeutic or educational services for the child in isolation from the family—without considering the family as a fundamental unit requiring care and support. Moreover, there are no clear plans for providing social support within an integrated strategic framework. This was determined at a significance level of (0.05).
