This study investigates the reinterpretation of the People of the Cave narrative across three dramatic works representing different media and cultural contexts: Tawfiq al-Hakim’s play (1933), the Iranian television series (1997), and the Egyptian feature film (2024). The research addresses how cultural diversity and the artistic medium shape dramatic structure and symbolic meanings. It assumes that the transition from a religious text to a dramatic form entails not only retelling the story but also reshaping meaning in relation to production and reception.
The study adopts a comparative multi-media approach, supported by descriptive–analytical, cultural, and historical methods. It analyzes plot, characters, dramatic structure, and symbols. Sources include primary texts, direct viewing of the works, and relevant critical literature. The texts are examined within their respective media (theatre/television/cinema) and situated in the Egyptian and Iranian cultural contexts.
Findings reveal that medium plays a decisive role in shaping interpretation. Al-Hakim’s play foregrounds philosophical–existential themes; the Iranian series conveys ideological discourse linked to revolution and resistance; while the Egyptian film utilizes cinematic visuality to deliver a contemporary treatment for a broad audience. Cultural context also proves decisive: the Iranian version highlights political and religious legitimacy, whereas the Egyptian versions emphasize universal humanistic and intellectual concerns.
The study concludes by recommending greater attention to comparative research in multi-media drama, expanded focus on the role of media in reshaping heritage and religious texts, and stronger interdisciplinary inquiry. It stresses distinguishing creative reinterpretation from ideological appropriation and encourages using shared religious narratives to enrich cultural dialogue.
