The phenomenon of divorce is considered one of the most serious social problems facing human societies at all times and places, regardless of the degree of civilisational and scientific progress, because it threatens the family entity with disintegration, division and various types of difficulties, which leaves its effects on society as a whole. Therefore, the aim of the current research to identify the underlying causes of this phenomenon and compare them to identify the change and difference of these causes through different generations and years in order to reduce their spread and effects on society.
In order to achieve this goal, data and statistics were collected from the records of the social research divisions in the Department of the Personal Status Court in Al-Baya and Al-Carda in Baghdad and for the years from (1989-1993) and from (2019-2023), and after tabulating and processing the data statistically and extracting the percentages of the reasons, the results showed the following:
1- The reasons are generally similar despite the passage of more than (30 years) and the exposure of society to many changes and difficulties from wars, regime change, siege and bitter cultural and economic conditions.
2- Through comparisons, it shows the difference in percentages of increase and decrease for these reasons in society.
In 1989, the highest percentages of reasons for divorce were polygamy, alcoholism, and suspicious relationships outside of marriage.
