The Battle of Damsah is considered one of the most important military events in the history of the Arabian Gulf in the second half of the 19th century. The events leading up to the battle began in 1866, when the men of Ahmad bin Muhammad Al Khalifa, the governor of Qatar at the time, attacked a caravan belonging to the Al Nuaim tribe in Al Wakrah, seizing its goods and imprisoning its leader, Ali bin Thamer. In response, Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani led the Qataris and besieged Al Khalifa’s representative in Al Wakrah Fort, but the latter managed to escape by night to Bahrain. The rebels succeeded in freeing the prisoner. In retaliation, the sheikhs of Bahrain launched an attack on Doha and arrested Sheikh Qassim bin Mohammed Al Thani. As a result, both sides prepared for war, and a battle broke out. This confrontation had significant consequences in Qatar’s history and is regarded as the actual beginning of Qatar’s independence under Al Thani rule.
As for the Battle of Al Wajbah, it took place on March 25, 1893, between the ruler of Qatar, Sheikh Jassim bin Mohammed Al Thani, and the Ottoman governor of Basra, Mohammed Hafiz Pasha, at Al Wajbah Fort in Qatar. The battle occurred amid escalating tensions between Sheikh Jassim and the Ottomans and ended with a victory for Qatar’s forces and the dismissal of the governor.
