The idea that philosophy can be practiced as a form of therapy has become the focus of discussion. This study explores how philosophy can be literally practiced as a form of therapy in a very different way: as a philosophical Therapy that addresses "real-life problems" in a practical or "applied" manner. Hence, our study focuses on researching and highlighting the role of philosophy as an "applied" therapy, as Themistius believed, in order to achieve "sustainable development".
The qualitative leap achieved by Themistius in his method of using philosophy differs significantly from his predecessors, by making philosophy a practical "applied" practice, whether on ethical situations related to "individuals" to achieve the ultimate good "maximum happiness", or in a broader way by applying it to the political situations related to the "state" that prevailed in his era, such as his advocacy and defense of religious tolerance and religious freedom. Thus, philosophy becomes for him more than just "theoretical" philosophy, but rather "practical and applied" philosophy that works to address the current real-world situations in his era in a way that achieves the goals of sustainable development.
Themistius also worked to create a kind of illustrative analogy to show the importance of "applied philosophy" by comparing (philosophy to medicine), through his presentation of his basic viewpoint that: the different methods of philosophy can benefit different types of men, just as (medicine) serves( bodies) with its specific diseases, so too (philosophy) serves (souls) that suffer from common diseases.
