Abstract: This paper sheds light on the impact of the plague of Justinian on Western European society during the sixth century AD. It investigates the social and religious reality of Western Europe and the extent of its link with the epidemic. It deals with the direct and indirect impact of the epidemic on the markets and trade in the Mediterranean world in an era that witnessed the demise of the era of the Western Empire or the central state in its old concept, and the dawn of two new worlds: the Byzantine world with the Greek dimension to the east, and the Latin Germanic world in the European west.
