This research studies the textual cohesion in Amal Dunqul’s poetry based on his linguistic and rhetorical structure, as well as his sentence structure. The aim is to define how cohesion between the lines and parts of Dunqul’s poetry through benefiting from the principles of text linguistics. The research takes two parallel ways to achieve its aims: the theoretical framework, followed by an application on samples from Dunqul’s poems with the aim of testing the theoretical hypotheses.
Two textual criteria have been investigated. These criteria are coherence and cohesion through creative texts in Dunqul’s complete works. Cohesion is built on three foundations: the grammatical cohesion represented in the relationship between grammatical meanings in the Arabic sentence (the referential relation, the transitive relation, the adverbial relation, the adjectival relation, appositive relation, affirmative relation, and the genitive relation).
The second foundation is the lexical cohesion represented in repetition and collocation. The third is phonological cohesion as represented in assonance and alliteration. The study of coherence is based on identifying the methods of semantic coherence at the sentence level on the short term and at the text level on the long level.
