The current study shows how modernity has influenced the language of Mahmoud Darwish in his collection of poems Bed of a Stranger, and caused a break with the reader. The most noticeable aspects of modernity are: lack of correspondence between the signifier and the signified, displacement, and pronoun references. Modernity consequently resulted in widening the horizon of expectation, plurality of references and preference of the prosaic style to the rhythmic style.
The study includes two sections: the first addresses the concept of modernity and the stages of intellectual development in the life of Darwish; the second comprises four subsections that respectively explore the lack of correspondence between the signifier and the signified, displacement, pronoun references, and tendency to use the prosaic style instead of the poetic style. The study finds that the modernist devices used in the collection contribute to the plurality of references and widening of the horizon of expectation. The modernist poetic structures further led to a vagueness and ambiguity that restrict the reader’s appropriation and response to the text and strip the poems of their rhythmic and poetic effects.
The researcher in this study used two techniques of the textual approach, namely description and analysis. و شىي f correspondence between the signifier and the signified, displacement
