Abstract: This study aims to explore the extent of social media penetration into the Kuwaiti society on the cultural, political and social levels, investigating both positives and negatives in a society that is distinguished by traditionalism that is part of an open and boundless world.
The study is on a sample of 325 individuals from all six governorates in Kuwait, including both males and females from the age of 20 years old to over 60 years old with different educational, professional and economic backgrounds.
The research aims to answer a number of questions that emerge from a main question which is:
Is using social media accompanied by openness to the international community and alienation to the national community?
The study found that social media opened the youth’s minds to the sexual life while it has posed challenges to family life and married couples. It has also opened the youth’s eyes to developments around the world, while it has affected increased violence among youth and made them more dismissive of reality, and helped them build objective opinions regarding current events and pushed them towards democracy.
